Specific Giving Opportunities

Here are some examples of specific project activities for which we are seeking to secure funding. If you would like to donate towards a specific project, please indicate this when sending your contribution. For more information on how to becoming a sustaining contributor for one or more project activities, please send us an email.

Contributing at the $0-$50 level

  • Sustained funding for our diabetic program in Santiago Sacatepéquez. It costs 5 dollars per month to provide medication to a diabetic, and we would like to guarantee coverage for 50 diabetics at this time.

  • Training materials for midwives. We provide all midwives in our program with a copy of the Hesperian Foundation's Un Libro Para Parteras. A gift of $20 can purchase one copy of this book. We would like to provide this resource to 100 new midwives in the coming year.

  • Purchase of diabetes testing supplies for the ACOTCHI midwifery cooperative. We would like to provide two new finger stick machines for measuring blood glucose for use in screening pregnant women for gestational diabetes. These machines cost $20 each. Also needed are several hundred test strips, which cost about $15-20 for 50 strips.

  • Purchase of vitamins and deworming medicines for children under the age of 5 in the village of Socorro, San Pablo Jocopilas, Suchitepéquez. It costs approximately $3 per month to provide these services, and we would like to extend them to the entire village, which contains approximately 200 children.

Contributing at the $50-$250 level

  • Purchase of hemoglobin testing supplies for the ACOTCHI cooperative, for use in screening and treating anemia during pregnancy. This machine costs $150. Also needed are several hundred test strips, which cost $95 for a box of 100.

  • Purchase of a doppler fetal heart monitor for the ACOTCHI cooperative. Cost $100.

  • Coverage of analytical water testing costs for the incipient potable water project in the small Kaqchikel village of Socorro, San Pablo Jocopilas, Suchitepéquez. We are testing possible water sources for fecal contamination, pesticides, fertilizer, and heavy metals. Total cost estimated at $200.

Contributions of more than $250

Contributions of any amount are accepted toward these larger projects, or they may be be sponsored completely.

  • Contributions toward publications costs for our bilingual herbal medicine and self-help book Tiqaq'omaj qi'.We anticipate a printing run of 500 copies in early 2008 with an estimated cost of $1000-1500.

  • Purchase of water rights in Socorro. We are negotiating for purchase of natural spring rights in this village as the initial step in the construction of a potable water system. Spring rights will be deeded to the community. The estimated cost is $3,700.
