Iximché - Tecpán
Tecpán is a bustling, industrious Kaqchikel community situated just off the Pan-American highway between Chimaltenango
and Lake Atitlán. It is one of the most-studied towns in Guatemala, with multiple anthropological and cultural
texts available for the interested reader. It is also a major intellectual center for the Maya movement,
and leaders from Tecpán have been at the forefront of national efforts for language revitalization
and Maya spirituality. This is perhaps appropriate, as modern-day Tecpán lies just a few kilometers from
Iximché, the important Post-Classic Maya ruins which were the seat of Kaqchikel power at the time of
contact with the Spanish Conquistadors.
In Tecpán, we work to support a recent expansion of ACOTCHI activities. These activities include midwifery education and advocacy, as well as a walk-in primary care clinic. This facility is the first of many planned expansions as we continue to advocate for broad-baased regional and national professional midwifery coalitions.
